Silicon is the second most abundant nutrient in the earth’s surface; however, weathering and the practice of growing turfgrass on the same soil for many years causes the depletion of important silicon. SILI-CAL SS provides the most soluble form of silicon to help address the plants silicon requirements.


SILI-CAL SS silica source is a result of the reduction of phosphate rock with coke in electric arc furnaces to produce elemental Phosphorous. This process involves the intra-reaction of phosphate rock, coke, and silica sand. The reaction requires a temperature of 1300-1500o C. When this heat is achieved, the coke reduces free phosphorous to elemental phosphorus vapor and silica sand combines with the resulting lime to form calcium silicate in its purest and most soluble form.


Calcium Silicate derived from stainless process contains high amounts of iron and aluminum, which is bind with the silicon, making those portions insoluble. SILI-CAL SS has the highest percentage of soluble silicon in the industry.


University research has shown turfgrass to be an active accumulator of silicon. When silicon is provided in the soil, it forms mono-and poly-silicic acids. These are taken up by the plant and form what scientists call a “double layer” of protection behind the cuticle. This gives the plant a second layer of protection created by the silicon stored in the cell walls, resulting in the following benefits:

Speeds up recovery of heat damage


Calcium silicate is stored in root cell walls, increasing mass and density, allowing more efficient uptake of nutrients and water.


Reduces the effects of sodium stress


When silicon is present in leaf tissue the concentration of sodium in the plant is decreased by up to 50%. Calcium silicate buffers sodium in the soil profile as well.


Decrease the effects of drought


Silicon displaces water in plant tissue as desiccation occurs, increasing the plant’s strength in drought conditions. Physiologically, increased silicon in plant tissue reduces evapotranspiration rates and increases the oxygen supply by strengthening air canal walls.


Aids in disease and pest resistance


Deposited silicon in the plant tissue prevents physical penetration by some insects and makes plant cells less susceptible to enzymatic degradation by fungal pathogens.
